Legends of Baisakhi

Legends have always been associated with festivals and on the similar lines Baisakhi also has some legends associated with it. The legends that are associated with Baisakhi portray that the festival of Baisakhi is not only important for Sikhs but for Buddhists and Hindus as well.

The legends associated with the festival of Baisakhi that mark the importance of this festival are given below:

Birth Of Khalsa

It is said that in 1699 the foundation of Khalsa Pant was marked by Guru Gobind Singh ji at Anandpur Sahib. On this particular day Guru Gobind Singh ji also gave amrit (Nectar) to his first five followers called the Panj Piyaras that made them Singhs, a soldierly group of people.

Receive Guru's Blessings

It is said that in 1567 on the festival of Baisakhi Guru Ram Das committed Baisakhi to be one of the especial days when all the Sikhs would assemble to get blessings from Guru at Goindwal.

It is believed that on the day of Baisakhi, Muslim rulers martyrized Guru Arjun Dev ji and the Guru was thrown alive into the boiling oil.

In 1875 Swami Dayanand Saraswati established Arya Samaj on the day of Baisakhi. This day is thereby special for Hindus, as Arya Samaj portrays a fraction of Hindus who have discarded worshiping idols and are dedicated to the Vedas for religious assistance.

On the day of Baisakhi Gautam Buddha achieved Nirvana in the town of Gaya under the Mahabodhi tree and thereby this day of Baisakhi is celebrated as Buddha Purnima in the various parts of country.
