Drawing is an art and unfortunately everyone is not an artist. The most important tradition of the Pongal festival is, drawing of the kolam. If any time during the year you visit southern part of India, you will come across several kolams that are drawn by people outside their houses, shops, offices and other places. Beautiful and colorful kolams can be seen during the Pongal days when different colors apart from the white color are used to decorate the Pongal kolam.
This art of drawing kolams is known through out India but by different names, such as in Uttar Pradesh it is known as Sanjhi. In Bengal it is known as Alpana. In Rajasthan it is accepted as Mandana. In Madhya Pradesh as Chaukpurna. In Maharashtra and Karnataka it is known as Rangoli. In Andhra Pradesh as Muggulu and Puvidal in Kerala. It is believed that Gautama Buddha himself was an expert of the kolam art.
